History: According to several Muslim scholars, the mosque was reconstructed and expanded by the caliph Abd al-Malik in 690 along with the Dome of the Rock.
Importance: Al Masjid Al Aqsa was the first Qibla in Islam and it has been a significant and important place of worship for the Prophet of Islam. It was built 40 years after Al Masjid Al Haram in Mecca.
